Yamato to O-Kiku, the twists and turns of gender bias in the world of One Piece

One Piece readers were confused when chapter 984 revealed the fact that the figure of Kaido's son, Yamato, was actually a boy. This confusion re-opens the debate on gender bias in the popular manga.

This last debate began in chapter 977. In that round, the figure of Kaido's son was mentioned for the first time and immediately became the subject of fan conversation on various platforms.

Some say that Kaido's son is Katakuri aka Big Mom's son. This speculation developed based on the similarity of the clothes that Katakuri and Kaido wore.

has an Oden-like make-up, such as straps on the back and chains on the wrists.

Eiichiro Oda once again broke the wild theory by directly showing Yamato's face in the next chapter.

Yamato's face is not as fierce as Katakuri and not as brave as Oden, but is described as a beautiful woman with long hair and horns that are very similar to Kaido's.

The name box also seems to confirm that Yamato is Kaido's daughter because it says "Kaido's Daughter". However, an oddity appears here.

When his figure was mentioned in chapter 977, Kaido called Yamato "my son" which in Indonesian means a boy.

The mention of "son" is repeated in chapter 979 when Kaido asks his subordinates, Tobi Roppo aka The Flying Six, to look for Yamato.

In one of the panels, Kaido refers to Yamato as "my idiot son", again meaning a boy.

The climax is in chapter 983, when Yamato crosses paths with Luffy. Yamato introduces himself by saying that he is "Kaido's Son" or the son of Kaido.

Eiichiro Oda seemed to be trying to answer fan questions on the last page of chapter 984, when Yamato was talking to Luffy

Yamato, who is described as idolizing Oden, said that he really wanted to be Oden. Not just like, but actually being Oden. He said that since Oden was a man, he would also choose to be a man.

The words came out of Yamato's mouth citing a panel released on the official Mangaplus by Shueisha website.

Those words seemed to confirm that Yamato was born a girl, but decided to change his identity to a boy because he wanted to become Oden.

The change in identity also seems to be agreed by the father so that currently Kaido always refers to Yamato as a boy instead of a girl.

The twists and turns of gender issues

This is not the first time that gender issues have confused One Piece fans. This problem has been sticking out since chapter 154 which was released on October 2, 2000 aka almost 20 years ago.

In that chapter, Bon Clay was introduced as Okama who ate the Mane-Mane Devil Fruit. Okama in Japanese means effeminate and Bon Clay is indeed described as a man with feminine traits and makeup like women.

Jump to chapter 537 which was released March 30, 2009, Eiichiro Oda introduced the figure of Ivankov to One Piece fans.

Ivankov is the king of the Kamabakka Kingdom which contains transgender people. Ivankov himself is described as a user of the Devil Fruit Horu-Horu which allows him to inject various types of hormones into the human body.

One of the hormones he often uses is testosterone and estrogen, which can turn a man into a woman, and vice versa.

So often Ivankov injected the hormone, he often changed sex in a short time. He had legitimized his decision in one part of the story.

A man, a woman, or an Okama (sissy), you have to be whatever you want to be, he said.

He also said, "For those living on the border like me, no, like the rest of us, the concept of gender means nothing."

Hundreds of chapters after Ivankov and his "new-kama" troop, the figure who sparked the debate about gender is back in the Wano Arc.

The character Kikunojo or OKiku who was originally introduced as a woman turns out to be actually a man. He is the younger brother of Izo, one of Whitebeard's men who has the appearance of a girl, but is actually a man.

The characters of OKiku and Izo were inspired by the figure of an onnagata, aka a male actor who plays a female character. Indirectly, both are considered as men who dress like women.

The difference is, Izo still shows masculine traits, while OKiku seems to have completely become a woman. In chapter 948, OKiku finally closed the debate with
